Quispamsis adopts ice helmet policy

Quispamsis now has a mandatory helmet policy.

Anyone using the ice surface at the qplex or Quispamsis Memorial Arena must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet. This applies to all on-ice activities, including public skating. CSA-approved helmets are proven to help reduce the risk of head injuries for participants of ice activities. Although this safety policy is in the best interest of ice users, there will be challenges for some who may not be able to afford to purchase a helmet.

To prevent children and youth from being unable to skate at Quispamsis arenas, the Town has partnered with P.R.O. Kids to provide helmets, free of charge, during public events. P.R.O. Kids has donated 100 youth helmets that will be available at the qplex and QMA. The helmets will be stored on a moveable rack that will be wheeled in and out during public skating and other bookings as required. The helmets will be cleaned after each use.

Five years ago, the Town adopted an internal safety policy requiring arena staff to wear a CSA-approved helmet while working on arena ice surfaces.
