Rothesay Regional Police Department

The Rothesay Regional Police Force is responsible for policing the Town of Quispamsis. The Rothesay Police Department began in 1951 as a one man Force. Chief Harry Miller worked day and night seven days a week and operated the police station from his home with the help of his wife and three daughters. In the beginning, the town did not have a vehicle so Chief Miller patrolled the streets of the town on foot. By necessity, his methods of enforcing the Motor Vehicle Act were unorthodox but effective. His manner of catching speeders was an example of his ingenuity. Chief Miller would stick out his thumb to hitch a ride and after being picked up he would watch the speedometer. If the driver exceeded the speed limit, Chief Miller would issue a speeding ticket to the unsuspecting motorist. In 1969 two more officers were hired by the Rothesay Police Department in order to look after policing duties for the Villages of East-Riverside and Renforth.

In 1984 the six neighbouring communities of Rothesay which included, Quispamsis, Fairvale, Renforth, Gondola Point, and East Riverside-Kinghurst agreed to make it a Regional Force - owned and operated by all of the communities. At this time, the Rothesay Police Department ceased to exist.

The Rothesay Regional Police Force expanded again in 1998 when the six communities were amalgamated into the two Towns of Quispamsis and Rothesay. The former local service district of Wells was also included in the newly formed towns . This expansion allowed the Rothesay Regional Police to hire four more officers.

Presently, RRPF consists of 31 police officers, as well as 8 civilian staff and 7 auxiliary members. Within the police force there are specialized services such as:

Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department Inc.

This department was formed in 1924 as the Village of Rothesay Fire Department. It was comprised of all volunteers and their first apparatus was a 1924 Ford Model "T chemical unit. Over the years the department grew in size and changed locations several times. In 1966, when several of the surrounding villages were incorporated the department began official fire protection to the six municipalities in the Kennebecasis Valley. In 1967 the first two (2) career fire fighters were hired, Chief Geoff Sayre and Deputy Chief Earl Carleton. In 1982 the Quispamsis fire station at 12 Civic Drive was officially

opened, giving a faster response time to the growing population in that area. In 1989 the department was regionalized and became jointly owned by all six municipalities. Then in 1998 the provincial government amalgamated the valley into two large towns. This amalgamation included the former six municipalities as well as a large portion of the parish of Rothesay. The department currently provides services to the towns of Quispamsis, Rothesay, and portions of three local service districts encompassing a coverage area in excess of 120 square kilometers.

With these changes and the increasing size of the force and equipment it was apparent a new fire station was necessary to house the organization. On April 22, 2001 the new fire station on Campbell Drive in Rothesay was officially opened. The department is a composite organization comprised of twenty-four career staff, four part-time fire fighters, and thirty volunteer fire fighters under the direction of Chief Larry Greer and Deputy Chief Brian Jensen. Housed in the two fire stations are two rapid intervention vehicles, four pumpers, three tankers, an equipment van, a Boston Whaler rescue boat, an all terrain vehicle and three service vehicles. The department can be reached by calling (506) 848-6601 or fax to (506) 848-6608.
